Misty Garden

by Kenny on January 10, 2006

I finished Misty Garden last night. It is now on its way to Australia, yeah, the country. Misty Garden is a present for my sister’s 25th birthday. Annie took the liberty to model it before it got boxed up.

Then of course, I worry. The post office does not insure mail going overseas unless I send it as registered mail. Registered mail would have cost me triple to ship. So I dropped it off, via uninsured mail and now I wait. 7 – 10 days they say.

My sister has no idea what it looks like. All she has seen is a bad photograph of the pattern done in a totally different yarn. The original pattern calls for Jo Sharp Rare Comfort Kid Mohair Infusion. Damn that’s a mouthful. How funny, Jo Sharp is Australian….. maybe it’s meant to be. Oh, and my sister totally doesn’t know about her brother’s gay blog either. :)

So, I’ve taken some pictures using different camera settings. I’m trying to experiment. I am just trying to get “indoor fabric photography” down. It’s hard, I either shake too much or the true color of the fabric doesn’t show. You guys need to tell me which is better, with or without flash.

The rest are just the details of the scarf.

Project Notes:
This yarn is just so pretty that I find it hard to bitch about it. But it does act strangely though. This is a 2 stranded yarn, each with different stretch. One strand is 100% rayon and the other strand is some mohair blend. As you knit, the mohair yarn starts to stretch and it gets longer and longer until it’s noticeably longer than the rayon strand.

So what? Shouldn’t effect the knitting. True, but if you’re picky like me, different story. The strands were dyed together and as one yarn becomes longer than the other, your color sections start to shift and colors don’t match up.

I tried to ignore it at first and it still gave a nice effect. Then I could stand it anymore and started to match the colors up every so often. I would just fold the “extra length” and hold it with the yarn and knit with it. I know, that last sentence didn’t really make sense, but I don’t know how to explain it in words. If someone really reads this blog and really wants to know what I did, feel free to e-mail me.

So, this was a simple feather and fan pattern. No problems there. Can I consider this my first lace project?

That’s all folks.

PS: I still need more votes on Iro for which Noro? You know me, no backbone, I will leave the decision entirely to the online community for what I should knit next. And I’m getting antsy, so hurry up and vote. Unless no one is reading this blog. Hmmmmff!

Feather and Fan most DEFINITLY counts as lace. Consider youself initiated into the mysterious cult of the lace knitter.

I understood exactly what you meant in that one part. It is something that I would do too.

An amazing scarf! Your sister will love it.

Mmmm. can’t vote on the noro question…I like them all. Close your eyes with them spread out before you…and choose the one that keeps leaping out at you. :)

The feather and fan scarf is lovely and I’m sure your sis will love it…and of course it counts as lace!

I will finally chime instead of being a lurker… personally I like York. My second choice would be Jabes. The scarf for your sister is stunning!

Just beautiful. I’ve been plodding along on this same scarf for several months – picking it up occassionally and doing a few repeats and then putting it down for a few weeks… I really should get my butt in gear and get it done.

“Feather and Fan” is an established and venerable pattern. This is your first lace project; congratulations.

And as far as the Noro goes, you can always work more than one of the designs, with appropriate budget planning. Being of ursine proportions myself, I wouldn’t knit any of them for myself because, with the horizontal striping, I’d look like the Michelen (sp?)Man wearing them. Still, I’d pick York, because the sleeve cap is fitted, so it’ll drape better. Ya gotta have really good shoulders to look really good in sweaters without shoulder shaping, IMO.

Awesome scarf!!!

I have put up a pic of Kyle in York if you want to take a boo.

And yes – the Naturally is for a plain raglan for Julie (she & her sister are the Cdn distributors for Naturally.) I’m just going to spit out a pattern with Sweater Wizard.

Annie looks better in red.
(just my opinion)

Hey Kenny – thanks for the comment today – hope you’re having a really GREAT day and tomorrow is even better. NO EMOTIONAL HANGOVERS! Take care of yourself.

Oh. OH! That’s what happened when I had that skein of rayon and mohair yarn! One stretched! Didn’t even occur to me. D’oh!
